Some road trips work because they make no sense on paper. Ours started at a vineyard with a glass of chilled white wine overlooking rows of grapes — and ended, the same afternoon, in the queue at one of India’s holiest Shiva temples. Wine to divine, in a single day. If you’re anywhere near Nashik, Maharashtra, this is one of the most satisfying day trips you can do.

The idea: two very different Nashiks in one day
Sula Vineyards and Trimbakeshwar Temple are both in Nashik and only about an hour apart by road, but they feel like different worlds. The trick is the order: do Sula in the morning when it’s cool and calm, then head to Trimbakeshwar later. Here’s how each half goes.
Morning: Sula Vineyards
Sula is India’s best-known winery, and it’s built for visitors. You can do:
- Vineyard tours and tastings — a guided walk through the wine-making process, ending with a tasting flight.
- Restaurants and viewpoints overlooking the vines — perfect for a slow breakfast or early lunch.
Go early: mornings are cooler, the light over the vineyard is gorgeous for photos, and you beat the afternoon crowds. If you’re filming, this is the spot — a polarising filter and a steady gimbal make the rows of vines pop.
Afternoon: Trimbakeshwar Temple
Trimbakeshwar is one of India’s twelve sacred Jyotirlingas, set at the source of the Godavari river. It’s a working temple of deep significance, so visit it with that in mind:
- Dress modestly — covered shoulders and legs.
- Expect queues at peak times — weekends and festival days get very busy. A weekday afternoon is calmer.
- Phones and bags are often restricted inside; keep valuables minimal.
Getting there & planning
- Base: Nashik is an easy drive from both Mumbai and Pune (roughly 3–4 hours), making this a great weekend trip.
- Local hop: Sula ↔ Trimbakeshwar is about an hour; a hired cab for the day keeps it simple.
- Time needed: a full day does both comfortably; stretch to an overnight if you want a relaxed pace.
What to carry
- Sun protection — hat and sunscreen for the open vineyard.
- A good camera or gimbal — the contrast between vines and temple makes for a beautiful video.
- Modest clothing for the temple, and slip-on shoes (you’ll remove them at the shrine).
FAQ
Can you really do both in one day?
Yes — they’re about an hour apart. Sula in the morning, Trimbakeshwar in the afternoon works perfectly.
Is it family-friendly?
Sula is relaxed and scenic; Trimbakeshwar is a pilgrimage site, so set expectations with kids about queues and temple etiquette.
Final thoughts
The “wine to divine” day works precisely because it’s a contrast — indulgent and serene in the same eight hours. Go early, hire a cab, dress for the temple, and let Nashik show you both its sides.
