Bannerghatta Zoo & Butterfly Park — The Complete Walkthrough (Bangalore Family Day Out)

Everyone talks about the Bannerghatta safari — and rightly so — but the zoo and butterfly park right next door are a brilliant, underrated experience in their own right. If you have kids, or you simply want a slower, gentler half-day in nature near Bangalore, this is the part of Bannerghatta that quietly steals the show.

We spent a full, unhurried afternoon walking every loop, and this guide covers exactly what you'll see, how to do it comfortably, and why the butterfly dome might just be the highlight of your entire trip.

The walking zoo: spacious, shaded, and well kept

Unlike cramped city zoos, Bannerghatta's walking zoo is laid out along easy, tree-lined paths with generous enclosures. On our loop we saw leopards, zebras, giraffes, nilgai and plenty more. The shade makes it pleasant even in the afternoon, and the pace is entirely yours.

  • Big cats — leopards and more, viewable from comfortable distances.
  • Herbivores — zebra, giraffe, deer and nilgai in open enclosures.
  • Birds and reptiles — worth slowing down for.

The butterfly conservatory: the hidden gem

Here's the secret most visitors miss. Tucked into the complex is a glass-domed butterfly conservatory — a humid, flowering micro-jungle home to around 20 species. Walk in slowly, stand still, and within a minute butterflies drift around you and occasionally land on your shoulder or hand.

It's the kind of quiet, magical moment that children remember for years — and adults secretly love even more.

Plan your visit

How to reach

📍 Same complex as the Bannerghatta safari, ~45 minutes south of central Bangalore. Pair the zoo and butterfly park with the morning safari for a complete day.

Tickets

The zoo and butterfly park have modest, separate entry fees; combo tickets with the safari are usually the best value.

Best time & tips

  • Mornings are cooler for the walk; the butterflies are most active in warm, bright midday light — so the zoo-then-dome order works nicely.
  • Comfortable shoes, a hat and water make the loop easy for kids.
  • Move slowly in the butterfly dome — patience is rewarded.

Is it worth it?

If you're already doing the safari, the zoo and butterfly park are a no-brainer add-on. And if you have small children or simply want a relaxed nature day without the early-morning safari rush, they make a wonderful standalone outing.

Don't skip the butterfly dome — it's the moment everyone ends up talking about on the drive home. Watch the full experience in the video above, and subscribe to Explore NY Stream (@explorenystream) so you never miss a trip. If this helped you plan, share it with a fellow traveller. Safe travels! 🌏
